HOW TO RUN A RACE

BACKGROUND

Participants want the follwoing from a race:

Athletic enjoyment

What time they did

And/Or What place they got compared to other participants in their grade, and other grades

A nice to have feature is the participants time compared to previous times for the same distance and location.

DELIVERY

The method to deliver the above to the participants is:

Control the race

Record their finish times, and finish order

Colate the results dependant on the type of race being run such as graded race, criterium, time trial, or handicap

Control The Race

Control the race takes preparation and execution as follows:

Create a calendar of events

Get approval to run the race

Source Marshals and Director(s)

Place warning signs for other road users

Advise the participants of the course, and any obstructions

Register Participants

Registration methods from slowest to fastest:

Assign a number, write down number, then write down their name; or

Use a computer, assign number, and select a members name; or

Use a computer, just enter the riders race number that has been pre-allocated; This is where the SignOnSheet will assist you (So download a 365 day free copy (Licence Fee required after 1 year) )!

Errors occur at this point unless you use just the riders pre-allocated number. However if you use a pre-allocated number you should also verbally confirm that the number entered matches the person standing in front of you.

Record their finish times, and finish order

Position your finish line marshals:

At least two people on the finish line to record all numbers, and click the stop watch;

One marshal positioned around 60-100 meters further on to record all numbers; or

The finish line judges order is final for the first three places in each grade. )!

It is also usefull for error correction, to match the riders number and the stopwatch time on paper every 10-20 riders. This is to fix where stopwatch clicks are missed or duplicated.

Slow way and Fast Way:

Go through the paper results and match riders by grade; then

Set the finish line order by grade; or

Use a computer system (This One) , and enter the riders numbers into the "Finish Chute" column; then Click "Results" )!
